“It's OK, Tommy. This is the man... and I mean "The Man," but he's cool.”
-The Omega Man, 1971
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock the past few weeks, the sports entertainment universe has been put on notice.
Kenny Omega is “The Man”...and he’s here to take over the world.
The current Bullet Club Prez and 2016 G1 Climax winner had arguably the best match of his illustrious career thus far at Wrestle Kingdom 11 against IWGP Heavyweight Champion, Kazuchika Okada. It may have only been 4 days into the new year, but fans & enthusiasts already praised this as the Match of The Year. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter rated the main event 6- stars, stating “Okada and Omega may have put on the greatest match in pro wrestling history”. The aerial display and in ring ability by both competitors set the stage for a back and forth contest which lasted over 45 minutes.
The Canadian-born Omega is not only praised and admired at home, but he is revered as a legend already in Japan. He is one of the many faces that is helping NJPW (New Japan Pro Wrestling) shine and it shows. Viewership for WK11 was up exponentially this year and now rumours are circulating that the promotion is looking to compete against the juggernaut that is called World Wrestling Entertainment.
And then this happened…
@KennyOmegamanX-Twitter for Kenny Omega
I will be stepping away from Japan to reassess my future. The path of my journey may change, but my goals will not.
We all know how our favorite wrestlers enjoying trolling their fans and this is no different. With the Royal Rumble right around the corner, thus beginning the road to WrestleMania, a tweet like this poses many interesting scenarios. Rumors have already been circulating on where Omega will end up, with some revealing that he has already committed to New Japan and signed a new contract. Other reports have hinted that Kenny has not hung his hat yet, that WK11 had made him feel “burnt out” and he has cancelled any upcoming appearance dates.
Then John Cena had to post a picture of Omega on his Instagram account and all hell broke lose. Many recall Cena doing the same thing with AJ Styles last year, literally right around the same time as the Royal Rumble, posing the question..
Is Kenny Omega jumping to the WWE ?
My belief is that competition creates ratings. The fact that the notion is even out there that NJPW wants to legitimately contend with the juggernaut that is WWE, makes me as a wrestling fan very pleased. I always had the belief that TNA would some way, somehow find the strength to legitimately compete with WWE. They had the star power and potential to do so. It showed when many former WWE talent made the transition, even though most ultimately returned back “home”.
New Japan is a global brand and more fans are beginning to take notice of the quality of matches and the talent being assembled. The Bullet Club, where Omega resides as acting leader, is a villainous stable created in NJPW . The group has helped catapult stars such as AJ Styles, Finn Balor, Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows, all of which who are now in WWE. If the promotion wants to compete with the big boys, they need to keep a stranglehold on one of their top mainstays, and that is Omega.
While I do not doubt that an athlete with such talent & charisma as Omega wouldn't succeed in WWE, I am fearful that he will be undervalued and not used properly (i.e. Sami Zayn, Neville, Anderson & Gallows, the majority of the Raw Roster..). It is in Kenny’s best interest to take the time he desperately needs to recover and recharge, assess his future, and come back to NJPW and make it the powerhouse it is capable of being.
It would be a dream to see Omega walk thru that certain at this year’s Royal Rumble. I also believe we, as a wrestling community are steadfast in the belief he could be a legend who doesn’t need the WWE.
Only time will tell "the Cleaner" makes his way across the pond to sweep away the competition.
This Sunday seems like as good a time as any to bring your broom Kenny..
